iPhone 1.1.3 Firmware Video?

December 30, 2007

For the past couple of days now rumours have been circulating the web about Apples new iPhone firmware version and more importantly what were the new features. Gear Live had the photos but people were saying they had been photo shopped so to quash that theory they released a video. Doesn’t look right to me, looks like it’s been set free from Jail, what do you think fake or not?

Our iPhone 1.1.3 news has been blowing up the Internet. Quite a few people think the images in our iPhone 1.1.3 image gallery were fake, so we figured, why not put up a video? Here is our video proof that 1.1.3 firmware is, in fact, real. Any questions you want answered about it? Let us know in our iPhone 1.1.3 thread.

Meantime, the video shows you all the features that we have found (so far) in the 1.1.3 update. That includes the home screen shuffling and reorganising of the icons, the multi-person SMS sending, the new “Locate Me” feature in the Google Maps application, Hybrid mode in Google Maps, and creating web bookmarks and putting them on your home screen.

Hoosgot What?

December 30, 2007

David Sifry founder and CEO of Technorati has announced the release of Hoosgot. Pronounced “Who’s Got” it’s a simple way to ask whos got what you are looking for.

Simply put “hoosgot” in a blog or twitter post and it will appear here. You can follow hoosgot on twitter to stay up to date with the goings on.

More detailed explanation from the man himself..

Today I’m unveiling a new service that I put together over the last 48 hours. It’s called hoosgot.com. Hoosgot (pronounced “who’s got…”) is a simple way to ask who’s got what you’re looking for. Just put “hoosgot” in a blog post or a Twitter tweet and it’ll show up on Hoosgot. Send a twitter to @hoosgot, it works as well. You can tag a post with hoosgot or lazyweb, and we’ll pick it up as well, as long as your blog is indexed by Technorati. It’s meant to give you a place to send the requests for all of those things that you’ve wanted, but just can’t find - chances are, what you want already exists and someone else out there in the ether knows about it (or has built it!)

If someone’s got what you’re looking for, or a clue in that direction, they post a comment. RSS feeds flow from the posts and the comments.

For example, you might ask:

hoosgot an easy-to-use pencil sharpener that has suction cups on the bottom so I can stick it anywhere?

or:

hoosgot a simple camera bag that you can stick a laptop in, and still carry over your shoulder without knocking over pedestrians? Note I’m not looking for a knapsack or a backpack, I want it to act like a messenger bag…

And so on.

It works if you work it: Give back to the web

Of course, you should subscribe to hoosgot, it has RSS feeds (the main feed and the comments feed) so you can watch and participate - for Hoosgot only works if you comment on the questions posed. Happen to know where someone can find the information they seek? Interested in collaborating with them on creating that invention described when the person invoked hoosgot or the lazyweb? Leave a comment on the entry, and give back to the web that has given us so much.

The @hoosgot Twitter User

Along with hoosgot.com, you can also subscribe to updates by following the @hoosgot user on twitter. When you invoke hoosgot or the lazyweb, don’t be surprised when you get a reply from @hoosgot! Tell your friends. Twitter away.

Songbird Release Version 0.4

December 29, 2007

Songbird

Songbird rings in the new year with the new version of the media player.

Songbirdrelease04

The new features include

  • New Songbird display panes allow add-on developers to populate specific panes in the UI with their own content, while providing the user a consistent and flexible way to interact with the add-ons that use them.
  • Improved iPod support (via the default-distributed iPod add-on) makes significant improvements to the UI, and now supports all iPods except the touch and phone. (Expect to see more iPod improvements, as well as support for other devices in 0.5+.)
  • General tuning of the application’s quality and stability is becoming a greater focus as we look toward our end-user debut. With this release, we’ve cleaned up the options dialog, playlist and library sorting and reordering, media download error states, Web media history, and a bunch of bugs.

I’ve been using Songbird for a while now and it just keeps getting better, excellent stuff!

Search Salad - The healthy way to search?

December 29, 2007

Searchsalad

Searchsalad provides search results from Google, Yahoo, Ask, MSN, Wikipedia as well as non-search sites such as eBay, Kelkoo, Engadget, Review Centre, CNET, YouTube, Blinx and Ciao giving coverage for web, images, audio, video, news and maps across all the sites.

Searchsalad1

The downside to having all this search stuff is the load time is quite long, and I personally don’t like each search result being in a box with sliders which means you have to move them around to read the whole result. Saying that though you can have a blended view with the “toss” button.

The video search tool is okay but for the moment by the looks of it only gets vids from YouTube, and the audio does the job but some of the search results I tried go to holding pages. The maps section is a little bit weird, don’t see how people would want 3 maps from Google, Yahoo and Microsoft all pointing to the same location?

Overall not bad for a one off search, but would not replace my normal searching. Give it a try at searchsalad.com

WidgetBucks Adds New Creative for Publishers

December 20, 2007

Widgetbucks

WidgetBucks has rolled out a new ad widget style, now you have two display options for each of the eight sizes offered. The new ads are noted with a “B” (for “B Series”) in the pull-down menu of the “Customise Your Widget” page, where you can also see a preview before selecting with option to choose.

Series+B+exampleOne modification not previously highlighted here is the ability to adjust the product rotation interval, allowing publishers to vary the pace by which products are displayed in their widgets. The default rotation is 3 seconds, but can be set anywhere from 1 to 10 seconds per item.

Updated/Corrected Details: Two “B” widgets (300×250 and 660×330) offer search boxes within them, while one “C Series” widget — the 300×250 medium rectangle ad — provides a simple top 10 product list without product images and reviews. Two examples of the new styles are sprinkled throughout this blog, and one static example is placed to the right.

The top five WidgetBuck categories are MP3 Players, Laptops, Game Consoles, Flat Panel Televisions and Cell Phones, respectively. And when it comes to ad sizes, here are the top four: 160×600 wide skyscraper, 728×90 leaderboard, 300×250 medium rectangle, and 468×60 full banner.

Google Ads being Hijacked

December 19, 2007

Google AdSense

A new Trojan that replaces Google text ads with ads from different providers has been spotted by BitDefender.

This malware uses the “hosts” file (located in the “%WINDIR%\System32\drivers\etc” directory) to redirect the initial query to the Google Adsense servers to a malicious host. This file is used as a first step in the name / IP translation process and if an entry is located in this file, the domain name server is not queried. The malware creates an entry redirecting pagead2.googlesyndication.com to a rogue server.

This server, rather than displaying advertisements from Google, display advertisements from a third party services. This damages both users (because the advertisements and/or the linked sites may contain malicious code - a very likely situation, given that they are promoted using malware in the first place) and webmasters (because they take away viewers and thus possible money sources from their websites).

To check if you are affected, you should issue the following command (from the command line or from Start -> Run):

ping -t pagead2.googlesyndication.com

The response should look similar to this:

Pinging pagead.l.google.com [6x.xxx.xxx.xxx] with 32 bytes of data:

where the x’s represent digits. If you are not infected, the first digit will be a 6 (as in the example). If you are infected, the first digit will be a 9.
