Microsoft Buys Multimap
December 12, 2007

Microsoft has bought Multimap for an undisclosed sum, as the technology giant looks to up the ante in the online mapping sector.
The move will see Multimap complement Microsoft’s existing mapping services, such as Virtual Earth and Windows Live Search. It will also enhance Microsoft’s potential to be the key online mapping provider, ahead of both Google and Yahoo!.
Sharon Baylay, of the online services group at Microsoft, said:
“The addition of Multimap enhances Microsoft’s position as a leading provider of mapping and location platform services. This acquisition will play a significant role in the future growth of our search business and presents a huge opportunity to expand our platform business globally.”
The acquisition comes just five months after Multimap relaunched its offering, including new features such as hybrid dragable maps, local Ebay vendor search and personalised journey planning, as well as the ability to integrate their mobile with the site.
